STYLE SEARCH ON... THE PERFECT WINTER WARMERS // BY JENNY SKIPPER

Against all the howls of protest from your housemates, the heating has finally gone on; the Secret Santa’s sorted, and Christmas (along with that coursework deadline…) is creeping ever closer. There’s no doubt about it; winter is here, and as Notts grows nippier by the minute, a good old shop for some winning warmers is definitely in order. From snug scarves to toasty sweats (plus a cheeky Christmas jumper or two, obvs), Style Search has it covered… as usual, no matter what your tastes and style.

FASHION FORWARD

The A/W 14-15 runways were all about fur, feathers and general fuzzy fabulousness; but fizzed up in popping shades of fuchsia, neon and tangerine (think scarlet shearling at Prada and dusky rose goathair at Gucci). For a pretty take on the trend, look to this stripy stole in fluffy blush from ASOS, or the colour-block version in indigo and baby blue for a high-street hit of fashion-pack favourite Shrimps’ clashing colourways. If you’re feeling brave, these sumptuous sheepskin cuffs or Urbancode earmuffs in magenta marabou are the last word in bold brights; and the ultimate way to cheer up that boring black ensemble on the trudge to another 9AM!
Poodle-pink earmuffs a bit Barbie-girl for you? (Though that look is hot right now, see Moschino S/S 2015…) If you’re still not sold on Shrimps, buy into next season’s Seventies styles to fight the winter chill. Push the preppy angle with this Prada-lookalike pullover from Nasty Gal; or slip on this folk-fringe lovely from Scandi-brand Monki for a hint of Pucci-esque hippie-chic.

CLASSIC

Pay the perfect homage to the most beautiful of Brit heritage-stylings with Urban Outfitters’ fab selection of fairisle gloves, hats and scarves. These co-ordinating cuties will pull together the hastiest of campus getups with their pretty print, whilst their super-soft gloves are so cosy you’ll want to keep them on even after you’ve legged it into Clive Granger in time for your seminar! A cable-knit jumper in classic cream is the most iconic of cold-weather staples- this oh-so-snuggly buy from Jack Wills is a sales steal reduced from £69.50; the price may still seem a bit steep, but you’ll be wearing such a timeless piece for years. Mix it up for the festive season with ASOS’s crimson-trim Christmas crew-neck. Only accompaniment needed for the big day: a slash of sizzling red lippy.

GLAM

When the big chill sets in, a fabulous furry stole is any self-respecting starlet’s sure-fire way to fight the freeze, and this toasty tippet in mysterious midnight blue will keep you looking glam all the way to campus. Sweater-wise, a bit of sparkle will spice up any seminar-ensemble; go for the subtle look with this silvery Warehouse knit, or amp it up with full-frontal sequins for the Christmas Eve pub run. Finish off with raspberry lips, sultry smoky eyes and- for something special- these gorge gloves in black cashmere from Topshop. Simple enough for everywhere from Sainsbury’s to Starbs; luxe enough to make that long wait for the cutthroat 34 that bit more bearable, treat yourself now for toasty mitts all winter long.

EDGY

In warm waffle knit and soup-spillage-proof cotton (just me?), this Urban Outfitters exclusive jumper is the perfect seminar-sweater for the winter. Super-versatile in stylish slate, the acid wash adds just enough edge to set it apart from the campus crowd. Glitz it up with this geometric necklace in gorgeous champagne gold, or pair with a plaid scarf for a tantalising tinge of Brit punk. Work in a witty yet warming twist with a slogan beanie (word to the wise: both Cara Delevingne and Jourdan Dunn have been spotted in the ‘Homies’ version; super-keen Cara owning it in three colours!) On the prowl for an edge-proof Christmas knit? Try this jolly jumper from- again- BDG at Urban Outfitters; super-cute with its penguin print; yet saved from the saccharine with its cool Aztec-pattern sleeves- a definite step-up from that tacky tinsel reindeer number at Primark!

What are your favourite winter warmers this season?

STYLE SEARCH ON… THE PERFECT 5-MINUTE LECTURE OUTFIT // BY JENNY SKIPPER

Every course has one; that girl who glides into lectures glam, gorgeous and complete with perfect blow-dry… while the rest of us are left to pair the remnants of last night’s Crisis make-up with the nearest, cleanest hoodie our bedroom floors can offer up. And no matter how much you tell yourself you’ll follow her lead, you just know it won’t happen; who’d haul themselves out of bed on a hungover morning any earlier than absolutely necessary, just to doll up for double labs? Week One’s over now and you’ve got no new course friends to impress; in fact they’re probably sat right next to you in an even sorrier state!
But for days when you draw the line at another uninspiring uni-issue sweatshirt or lackluster leavers’ tee, help is at hand with Style Search’s easy-peasy 5-minute lecture outfits. Give that perfectly put-together girl a run for her money… without sacrificing your favourite Notts nights out.

FASHION FORWARD

Take inspiration direct from the A/W 2014 runways with this plastic-fantastic mac from- where else?- ASOS. Sweet, sunny and totally rain-sensible for those showery slogs to campus, it plays the perfect homage to Miu Miu’s Sixties-schoolgirl chic show… so Girl-Guides-camping done fabulously with these sparkly Slimane-inspired Mary-Janes. Keep it cute with a pretty pleated skirt and cartoon-motif sweatshirt; or go just a little bit grown-up with this cropped mod shell top. The best part? This look is all about insouciant innocence, so make like Miuccia’s models with minimal make-up and messily-placed barrettes- manageable for even the maddest of lecture dashes!

Or buy into the bohemian bug that seems to have bitten the S/S 2015 runways with these sumptuous suede over-the-knee boots from Topshop. Seventies styles are set to be huge in the Spring (see Prada’s psychedelic prints, Gucci’s Woodstock-worthy suedes, or Pucci’s fabulous flower-power embroidery); these pack an instant blast from the past with their chunky heel and slouchy shape. Hone your hippie credentials with this homespun folk-look satchel bag and a fetching fedora, and wrap it all up with a cosy blanket cape. On point trend-wise (we saw similarly snuggly- and totally drool-worthy!- shawls at Burberry A/W 14, monogrammed with the models’ initials, natch), at last we have a socially acceptable means of remaining bundled up in a blanket all day… what could be nicer to toss on in the morning mayhem?

CLASSIC

For an instant hit of pulled-together prettiness (no need to trawl your drawer for a jumper to match that sole pair of vaguely clean jeans!) daytime dresses should be your go-to… and this season’s Sixties-chic trend offers the perfect way to take the look from sweet to spectacular. Stand out from the crowd in this beautiful blue skater coat- the hottest hue of A/W 14 as sported at Gucci, Dior and Roksanda Ilincic- and seal the deal with some palatable patent Mary-Janes. Such a lively pop of colour may seem a frightening prospect in the sea of baggy black jumpers and pedestrian parkas that is Portland this time of year; but surely the prospect of another 9-5 on campus is depressing enough without dragging us all down dress-wise too. Give yourself something to smile about; if the cute colourways here don’t do it for you a good old shopping trip will!

We’ll admit it; yellow plastic macs aren’t for everybody… and- sob!- may not be the most timeless of ‘investment buys’ either! If the loan’s looking tight and your lecture-dash find needs to last you, look no further than a camel coat. Classic Coco-chic with black or navy; the perfect pared-down base for brights, it’s a true wear-anywhere, forever-buy.. and an easy touch of elegance to even the hastiest of ensembles, all for the bargain price of £39.99. Sharpen your semblance of organisation with diamond-look studs and this crystal-neckline sweatshirt from Topshop; a foolproof bit of bling for those miserable mornings where you barely have time to brush your hair, let alone mess about with a real necklace.

GLAM

What could be a better piece of old-school glam to shove on in a scramble than a sumptuous fur coat, and the runways agree: Gucci, Fendi, Prada and Alexander McQueen (to name just a few) all featured a plethora of fabulous fluffy cover-ups that the high street has done a brilliant job of feigning this winter. Quoting Karl Lagerfeld- ‘You cannot fake chic, but you can be chic and fake fur’ as their motto, look to fashion-pack favourite Unreal Fur for a luxe treat. Their Wanderlust coat in gorgeous, guilt-free black longhair has unsurprisingly been spotted on a host of celebrities including MIC’s Rosie Fortescue (try Topshop for a cheaper choice as worn by Ariana Grande!) Toughen it up with ripped jeans, studded bikers and a big slouchy sweater, or go full-on glamazon with a perennial leopard-print dress (a popular print for A/W 14; see Celine, Chloe, Saint Laurent and Givenchy) and a glitzy gold watch (Xmas pressie potential anyone?!)

EDGY

Intrinsically casual yet bang-on-trend (think nineties-normcore seen at Chloe and Hermes A/W 14; very Corinne Day-styling-Kate Moss with a focus on laidback basics), what could be better for a day of lectures than a classic grungey shirt and leather look leggings? Treat yourself to this oh-so-soft cashmere tank from Topshop, the perfect piece of everyday luxe to turn standard to stylish, and polish your grunge-girl guise with the shoes of any self-respecting rocker; an iconic pair of Doc Martens. Scared that horrible sprint to the bus stop may be necessary?! Smooth your way stylishly with a natty pair of Nikes in cool ombre effect; letting the shoes do all the talking with a chilled-out cricket jumper and pared-down paisley leggings. Leg it to lectures nailing the effortless, easygoing aesthetic of the season and still get that essential extra half-hour in bed… perfect!

What's your go-to 5 minute lecture outfit?

STYLE SEARCH ON... THE PERFECT LBD // BY JENNY SKIPPER

In the often repeated words of Karl Lagerfeld, ‘One is never over-dressed or underdressed with a Little Black Dress’… it’s a cliché, but because it’s true. Worked with a witchy hat for Halloween; glammed up with a glitzy necklace for the Christmas formal or bundled up with a cosy cardigan for your 9AM, there’s nowhere you can’t wear a good LBD. Equally at home at your office internship or the Big O, there’s no staple easier to style… now all you have to do is find the perfect one! Luckily, that’s where Style Search comes in, with our super selection of the high street’s finest little black dresses.

FASHION FORWARD

This Missguided minidress packs a serious punch of Mad-Men chic with its fun marabou trim. Mod styles like this were massive on the A/W 2014-15 runways (think Gucci, Saint Laurent and Miu Miu with their groovy go-go boots and sweet shift dresses), and feathers are having a bit of a moment too… see this-season Marni with their tide of feather-festooned skirts and knits. Even Victoria Beckham is getting with the programme, recently sporting a similarly fluffy frock from her own collection; this one in white. Well, if it’s good enough for Posh…

Or go just a little bit Game of Thrones, channeling Dolce and Gabbana’s A/W 2014 dark fairytale vibe. Now reduced from £72.00 to £21.00, this A Wear dress is a total steal, and with its ruched silky chiffon, ultra-feminine waist detailing (in intricate gold beading to help you feel like the perfect medieval princess) and open back for just a hint of Sicilian sexiness, it’s undeniably fabulous as well as fashion-forward.

CLASSIC

With its adorable sweetheart neckline, natty nipped-in waist and built-in petticoat for that perfect sticky-out skirt, you couldn’t find a lovelier LBD than this one by Jones & Jones; a foolproof, feminine choice for your next big occasion.

'Jessie' a bit frou-frou for you? Snag all the sleek poise of Audrey in this sumptuous velvet number by Nasty Gal; classy for campus with its high neck but just slinky enough for the next Fashion Soc social with its backless detailing. Don’t miss the beautiful mock diamond and pearl embellishment at the neck- so Breakfast at Tiffany’s and a tantalising touch to set this apart from the LBD crowd.

Or maybe you’re simply hankering to go back to black with a no-frills, wear-anywhere LBD. In that case, look no further than this fab fit-and-flare frock by Topshop. It boasts all the same ultra-flattering features of our Jones & Jones pick; but just toned-down enough for the Trent Building… a truly dexterous dress that will dazzle wherever you go, well worth its £46 price tag.

GLAM

To really push out all the stops, there’s nothing like a bit of bodycon; and this Nasty Gal number will skim, shape and slim in all the right places. What with the same beautiful bandage knit as that Herve Leger frock you wish you could afford, and its cool asymmetric shoulder, it keeps it classy rather than brassy… making it ‘fitting’ for a formal as well as a night out on the tiles!

For a gorgeous hit of unadulterated glamour, go for this sensational sequin shift from Topshop. Sixties styling meets high-octave Gatsby glitz, all twisted up with pretty pleat detailing at the front; a bargainous beauty (or at least an investment buy!) to treasure for years to come.

EDGY

You only need look to the S/S 2015 shows to see that this cute black skater dress from River Island is bang on trend. Leather led the way at Paris Fashion Week; and not in jacket or boot form, as you’d expect. Rather, we saw this most quintessential of biker chick basics crafted into an array of exquisite new colours and cuts (see Nina Ricci’s black leather utility gown, inspired by the legacy of a war-torn Paris). This showstopper is the perfect way to get ahead of the fashion curve, with its girly shape and flattering fit softening what can be an intimidating trend for any leather-dress virgins out there. In 100% genuine leather, it’ll last you through many a Crisis-induced crisis, but what if your loan won’t stretch to the real deal? Try Topshop’s take on the trend; this one with cool cut-out sides.

Splash out on a piece of fashion history with this fabulous football shirt-chic dress from the Alexander Wang x H&M collection. Wang’s main direction for this collaboration was sportswear, given an after-dark makeover, stating, ‘When you’re dancing and running around at night, you sweat. You don’t just sweat when you’re at the gym or playing sports.’ Sounds like any typical night at Stealth to us, and yet this lacey mesh lovely can also be given a speedy stroke of sophistication with strappy sandals and a sleek blow-dry a la Kate Mara, who rocked this at the collection’s launch party in New York. The line hits stores on November 6th… sharpen your elbows ready for this one, it’s a guaranteed sell-out.

EBAY FASHION FINDS #3 / WOMENS FASHION

At this point of the term, the work load is starting to mount up, you may be feeling a bit homesick, and it's getting miserable outdoors, so there's only one thing to do - procrastination / retail therapy via online shopping. As always, my favourite place to hunt out some serious fashion bargains is Ebay.

I've found you thoroughly fancy and fabulous fashionistas (say that 10 times fast) some pieces that I think could be worth welcoming permanently into your wardrobes. As always, links below. Happy shopping!

1) Black dress - this is a super cute LBD which you could always fall back on for a night out.
2) Floral trousers - the darker floral print on these makes them autumn-friendly.
3) Sweater - for those days when, yeah, you did wake up exactly like that!
4) Bee dress - this would look so adorable with thick cable knit tights and chelsea boots.
5) Cut out top - this channels that 90's grunge vibe nicely.
6) Orange bag - a pop of colour for your (probably 99% black) winter wardrobe.
7) Mint coat - pastel coats are seriously cool right now and this is so cheap that you won't feel as guilty as splashing out on that Topshop version.
8) Oversized khaki hoodie - this just looks so cosy and quite perfect for throwing on to nip out to Sainsbury's when you need some more milk!
